Happy Mother’s Day! As we celebrate this day for all of you special moms, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on what it means to be both a mother and an artist. For many of us, the idea of juggling family responsibilities and personal passions can feel daunting, even exhausting at times. But what if I told you that you don’t have to sacrifice your creativity to be there for your loved ones?

This year, Mother’s Day finds me on the sidelines of a soccer field, watching my daughter try out for a competitive travel team. Not exactly a leisurely brunch, but honestly, I wouldn’t trade it—though I wouldn’t mind if the scheduling gods had been slightly kinder! Sunshine on my face, cheering her on, maybe a quick visit to the mimosa bar for the moms—it’ll still be a good day. But it does remind me just how elusive “me time” can be once motherhood enters the picture.
I had always been creative; by the time my daughter arrived, I’d been painting nearly full-time for a few years. Becoming a mom didn’t dampen that creative spark, though. Suddenly, my mind was flooded with inspiration and ideas. But while creativity might have expanded, time and energy certainly didn’t. In those early days, it often felt like the well was running dry, even as my heart overflowed. Love might be limitless, but time? Not so much.
I’ve learned over the years that it’s all about finding balance and making room for what truly nourishes your soul!
Time Doesn’t Have to Be a Barrier to Creativity
I understand—time is never plentiful, especially when you’re balancing life, family, and work. But creativity doesn’t need huge blocks of uninterrupted hours. Even a few minutes here and there can nourish you in surprising ways.
If you ever find yourself thinking you’re “too busy” to paint or create, I encourage you to start small. Carve out 10 minutes with a sketchbook, play with color for a short break, or set aside just enough time to do something for yourself. It doesn’t have to become another task on your list—it can simply be a quiet reminder of who you are beyond your daily responsibilities. Those tiny pockets of creative freedom have a way of multiplying, opening doors you didn’t even realize were closed.
When you give yourself permission to be creative, even for a short amount of time, it becomes less of a luxury and more of an essential part of your well-being. It’s amazing how a little creative outlet can spark joy and bring clarity to everything else you do.
Creativity in the Everyday
For mothers, creativity doesn’t have to be something that happens only in big chunks of time. It can be about noticing the little things—those fleeting moments throughout your day that might not seem like much, but when combined, offer SO much.
Maybe it’s grabbing a quick photo reference during an afternoon walk, sketching while your child practices soccer, or mixing colors with them at the kitchen table after dinner. Creativity will naturally weave itself into the fabric of our busy lives when we let go of perfection and expectation. It’s less about adding another commitment and more about reclaiming moments that already exist.
For me, integrating creativity into my life has meant embracing the small, beautiful moments in between the chaos of motherhood. Whether it’s a five-minute creative session or spending time with my kids while I create, it all matters. Creativity offers calm, connection, and clarity—things we all could use more of in our everyday lives.
